The zoo is known for its well-designed, themed habitats, including the African Savanna, Louisiana Swamp, Jaguar Jungle, and the World of Primates.

One of the most distinctive features is the Louisiana Swamp exhibit, which highlights the region's native wildlife and culture. Visitors can see black bears, cougars, and the zoo's famous albino alligator in settings that replicate natural bayou environments. The zoo also includes an aviary with more than 30 species of birds and provides hands-on learning opportunities through interactive exhibits and programs. In recent years, the zoo has introduced “wild encounters,” which allow guests to have close-up experiences with animals such as jaguars and penguins.

Ongoing improvements and renovations continue to enhance the zoo’s offerings. A major update to the Jaguar Jungle area is currently underway, which will include new habitats and educational spaces, with completion expected in early 2025. The zoo plays a key role in regional conservation efforts and participates in rescue programs for marine mammals and sea turtles. Through its educational outreach and immersive exhibits, Audubon Zoo remains a vital part of New Orleans’ cultural and natural heritage.
